Suppository or ointment ?

I have been to doc and he gave me a suppository for my **** fissure to heal before he can exam whether i got hemorrhoid or not due to bright red blood presented after passing hard stool.

I am now wondering why the doc gav suppository instead of ointment, Does any one of them hav any advantages such as efficiency over the other? I asked this cos mayb next time i might bought over the counter medication myself to relief my fissure
