What’s the quickest way to relieve an external hemorrhoid?

I have had internal hemorrhoids off and on since I gave birth 9 years ago. But this week I have a very uncomfortable “lump” you-know-where. There’s no bleeding, but it hurts to sit and even bothers me when I walk around. I’m assuming it’s just an external hemorrhoid. I haven’t seen it, just felt it (with a gloved finger of course!). What’s the quickest way to relieve the discomfort? I used a suppository this morning, which always seems to work for the internal ones, but it’s not helping much for this one.
